Happy Monday, wizards.
Latest from the ongoing NYT vs OpenAI lawsuit: A federal judge just called BS on OpenAI's request to investigate NYT journalists' AI usage, comparing it to a video game company trying to probe if people suing them for copyright infringement play video games themselves.
Hereβs whatβs brewing in AI today.

Amazon and Anthropic are deepening their partnership. Hereβs the details:
Amazon is doubling down on its investment in Anthropic, pumping another $4 billion into the company, bringing its total funding amount to $8 billion.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) becoming Anthropicβs βprimary training partnerβ. Theyβll use Trainium and Inferentia chips for future models; this ties directly into Amazonβs plan to rival Nvidia with its own AI chips.
Anthropicβs AI, Claude, will power the new βintelligentβ Alexa voice assistant (coming in 2025). Claude did a better job when tested vs Amazon in-house model, which they initially planned to use.
β Why it mattersβ β The partnership has strong synergies:
Anthropic is getting access to the financial resources and compute it needs to compete with OpenAI, Google and Meta in advancing state-of-the-art AI models.
Amazon, on the the other hand, is at a make-or-break moment when it comes to loosening Nvidiaβs complete grip of the $100-billion-plus market for AI chips. Anthropic will be customers, as well as actively developing, hardware and software for frontier model training.

The Information continues to spill tea on upcoming developments for OpenAI. This time, itβs that OpenAI is working on a web browser to directly challenge Google. This comes at a time when Google is under scrutiny and the US Department of Justice has suggested Google should sell off its Chrome browser to break its monopoly on online search. Itβs mentioned that OpenAI is currently nowhere close to launching a browser yet, though.
The second piece of rumours is that OpenAI is in talks with Samsungβa key Google business partnerβtrying to strike a similar deal as they have with Apple and Apple Intelligence.
β Why it mattersβ β OpenAI has already improved their web search inside ChatGPT by an order of magnitude with their latest update. It seems very plausible that theyβre strategising on how to take some more of Googleβs sizeable cake.

Google AI Studio just introduced a new feature in model selection that brings key information front and center, making it easier to pick the right AI model for the job.
In addition to pricing of each model, the new selector highlights what each model is best at (like image understanding, video analysis, long context processing), exemplifies it with practical use cases (process 3,000 images at a time, realtime translation), shows the knowledge cutoff dates, and indicates how fast the model responds.
Currently, these detailed overviews are available for the three versions of Gemini 1.5 (but not the new preview models).
β Why it mattersβ β This is makes it easy to grasp how Googleβs leading models are different from each other and what theyβre best at.
AI Studio is primarily intended for developers building and prototyping with Googleβs models; a similar UI improvement could be helpful also for ChatGPT, or for any chatbot that lets users select models themselves.
THATβS ALL FOLKS!
